It executes during system boot and handles a variety of tasks including the creation of environment variables, starting the kernel and user modes, creation of DOS mappings for various devices, creation of paging files within the virtual memory, and the start of Windows logon manager process. After this process completes these tasks, it sits idle and can be shown as an active process within the Task Manager. This file requires other system processes to execute or the system will shut down.
